If you’re picturing trying to fix a painful latch over video and thinking, “How?” — you’re not alone. A lot of parents wonder whether virtual lactation visits are actually helpful. The short answer: often, yes.
What I Can See Over Video
With the right angles (and a little patience), I can usually see:
- How you’re holding baby and supporting their neck and body
- Baby’s body alignment (tummy-to-tummy or twisted)
- How wide baby opens before latching
- Where your nipple lands in baby’s mouth
- Baby’s jaw movement and rhythm while sucking
Those details tell me a lot about what might be causing pain or inefficient milk transfer.
What a Virtual Latch Visit Feels Like
Typically, we’ll:
- Talk through your history and what you’re struggling with most
- Watch part of a feed together (if baby is willing!)
- Try small adjustments in position, support, or latch technique
- Discuss options like pumping, supplements, or referrals if needed
When Virtual Works Especially Well
- You’re not sure if the latch is “deep enough” and want another set of eyes
- You’re dealing with ongoing soreness but baby seems to be gaining okay
- You live far from in-person support or need flexibility with timing
When You May Also Need In-Person Care
Virtual support doesn’t replace medical care or hands-on assessment when it’s needed. I may recommend in-person evaluation if I’m concerned about things like oral anatomy, low tone, or other factors that truly require touch.
Think of virtual visits as a powerful tool in your toolkit — not the only tool.
